    Interreligious Eco-Justice Network

IREJN, Connecticut’s Interfaith Power and Light affiliate, is a statewide network of nearly 550 congregations promoting environmental stewardship and advocacy among people of diverse faiths. In addition to their advocacy for climate protection and clean energy, IREJN stewardship classes’ have resulted in 56 congregations making up to 50% reductions in energy use. IREJN also organizes energy audits at congregant’s homes and businesses.

Current Major Initiatives

The State of Connecticut was among the first states in the nation to meaningfully acknowledge and address climate change.  Connecticut’s current major climate change initiatives are profiled below.  Click on the title of each initiative to read more.

Draft Greenhouse Gas Reduction Strategies

The GSC is analyzing a portfolio of additional strategies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.  View analysis process and the strategies under consideration.  The Draft Greenhouse Gas Reduction Strategies Table (PDF) summarizes additional potential greenhouse gas reduction strategies for consideration in Connecticut. The table summarizes progress on meeting greenhouse gas (GHG) actions included in the 2005 CT Climate Change Action Plan and [...]

Adaptation

The Adaptation Subcommittee of the Governor’s Steering Committee on Climate Change is analyzing climate change impacts on Connecticut’s infrastructure, public health, natural resources and ecological habitats, and agriculture. The Subcommittee has developed draft reports on climate impacts.

Low Carbon Fuel Standard

CT has been working with other northeastern states on the development of a low carbon fuel standard that would reduce GHG emissions associated with each unit of energy produced by a given fuel on a life cycle basis.

Energy Efficiency

Connecticut is fortunate to have in place one of the top, nationally recognized, energy efficiency programs in the United States serving residential, commercial, and industrial customers. In 2008, the last year of complete data, the Connecticut Energy Efficiency Fund served over 460,000 ratepayers, reduced 2.4 million tons of CO2 (lifetime), and saved $66 million ($774 lifetime).

American Recovery and Reinvestment Act

ARRA funds, also known as federal stimulus funds, have been allocated for many energy and transportation projects in Connecticut that will result in greenhouse gas reductions. Read more about ARRA transit, energy, and diesel reduction funds.

Clean Energy

The Connecticut Clean Energy Fund offers financial incentives and educational programs to encourage homeowners, companies, municipalities and other institutions to support renewable energy and lead the nation toward a brighter energy future.  Connecticut residents, businesses, communities and educators have joined together to push for clean renewable energy sources in a dedicated effort to lessen our dependence [...]

CT’s GHG Reduction Targets

In 2008, CT became one of a handful of states in the US with required GHG reduction targets: 10% below 1990 levels by 2020 and 80% below 2001 levels by 2050.

Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI)

CT collaborated with other northeastern states to develop the first-in-the nation cap and trade program to reduce GHG emissions. The Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI) will stabilize carbon dioxide emissions.

CT Collaboration with Governors and Subnational Governments

Connecticut has actively participated in efforts to highlight the successes and the important role of subnational governments (e.g., states, regions, towns) in addressing climate change.
