Transportation and Land Use Strategies

Transportation emissions account for approximately 40% of Connecticut’s GHG emissions.  Strategies to reduce emissions from this sector focus on increasing vehicle and fuel efficiency as well as reducing vehicle miles traveled through smart growth and mass transit initiatives.  The strategies in the Transportation and Land Use sector that are currently being analyzed by NESCAUM include:

  • continued participation in the CA Low Emissions Vehicle program, including GHG emission standards for light-duty vehicles;
  • establishing a light-duty vehicle feebate program;
  • adopting a regional low carbon fuel standard;
  • implementing smart growth strategies;
  • adopting transit measures to reduce vehicle miles traveled;
  • reducing maximum highway speed limits;
  • expanding clean diesel programs.
